"Gaineswood," statle, 107-year-old mansion, located in Demopolis, Alabama, took 18 years to build. Gen. Nathan B. Whitfield, a native of North CArolina, completed the 16-room mansion in 1860. It was built in the finest tradition of the Greek Revival style of architecture. One of the more interesting features of the mansion is the presence of two domes, one over the parlor and one over the dining room. Each dome is crowned by a cupola, three feet in diameter and equipped with windows to provide lighting. Ornate chandeliers hang from long chains secured in the top of the ceiling.
