The title selection,I’d Rather Have Jesus, belongs in thelatter category. Mr. Shea wrote it severalyears ago. There are many features in this album torecommend — like the moving recitation ofJust As I Am . . . like the music, the melody ofReach for the Hand, of the Lord (listen to itclosely) . . . like the solemnity when Bev Sheaperforms Ivory Palaces . . . like the “message”of There Were Only a Few (At the Cross),a lament deploring the lack of religious fervor(so true, although he doesn’t sermonize). . . like his not-so-standard treatment of Willthe Circle Be Unbroken ... and so onthrough the ten pieces.Personally, I feel listening to these selections iscomparable to attending a church service . . .inspirational in effect. It could be that Mr. Sheawas inspired more than usual when he didthis album. For the first time, his wife Irmaand son Ronnie were in the studio duringthe recording and it was obvious theyappreciated what they heard. In fact, another part of this album is a familyaffair also! George wrote I Will Praise Himwith his daughter, Elaine Anderson, and she setthe pattern for the harmony with Georgeon a little demonstration tape theymade together at home.It is an all-around professional product. The Nashville Sounds provide a well-trainedmini-choir of background support;Australian born Bill Walker (now a citizenof the U.S.) came up (again!) with someclassic type arrangements, and Mr. Shea’sresident producer, Danny Davis, wasin charge of production.Whatever your musical tastes, I have an ideayou’ll enjoy hearing a real pro at work.Red O’Donnell— The Nashville BannerThese liner notes refer to George as a “pro.”As a producer I can tell you he is just that.Everyone who records should be as wellprepared and capable as “Bev”!Danny DavisIt is a great pleasure to work with GeorgeBeverly Shea. I found it a very meaningful andwonderful musical experience. He is a verywarm, sincere person.Bill Walker lp5083-AV
