The ashtray rests in the square cutout and the opening and closing ashtray door rides on the plastic rails. It's in nice useable condition for being over 50 years old! No rust. This will not work on short consoles. Correct for all 71 72 and 73 Mustangs and Cougars with the full size center console. Original Ford or FoMoCo Factory part!
