Kennedy on November 22, 1963 was the first event of its type which sent shockwaves around the world due to the advent of modern media. Congress moved almost immediately to commemorate the fallen President on a coin. The half-dollar was the most logical choice, but as the beloved Franklin was the current half-dollar and had been in circulation for less than the required 25 years, a special act of Congress was required to authorize its replacement. · Gilroy Roberts chief engraver of the US Mint from 1948 to 1964, designed the obverse of this coin. His stylized initials are at the truncation of the forceful bust of Kennedy. The reverse which uses the Presidential Coat of Arms as a motif, is the work of Frank Gasparo, who was appointed Chief Engraver in February 1965. A few of the pieces dated 1971-D and 1977-D were struck on Silver Clad plachets (1965-70) in error. · The obverse features a left facing bust of Kennedy forceful bust of President Kennedy which was influenced by suggestions from Mrs. Kennedy. “LIBERTY” is spread around the upper rim with the Motto split between the bust. The date is below the mintmark, which is near the truncation. The reverse is the first to use 50 stars around the perimeter, and thirteen rays above the Eagle holding a bundle of arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The denomination is below the eagle. · In the early 1970’s an open contest was held to design reverses for the bicentennial coinage of the quarter, half-dollar and dollar coins. Seth G. Huntington’s winning entry featured a view of Independence Hall in Philadelphia as the central device. The obverse was unchanged except for the dual date of 1776-1976 which appeared on all 1975 and 1976 issues. · Coinage for business circulation ceased after the 2001 coinage. Issues struck from 2002 – 2020** were for inclusion in proof and mint sets or sold directly from the US Mint. Due to the pandemic which caused a coin shortage in many cities, circulating coinage was resumed in 2021. · Key Dates: None ** 1987 issues were not released for circulation. 2005 Issues were released for circulation
