It signifies two novel elements in Vuillard's development. For the artist it represents a growing allegiance to the Impressionist mode of observation, where form is enlivened by being bathed in light and atmosphere and windows look out to the sky. It also marks his entry into the world of the rich, cultivated French upper bourgeoisie of which Madame Fontaine, wife of an important industrialist and sister-in-law of the composer Ernest Chausson, was a conspicuous member. In her Paris apartment near the Invalides she held musical gatherings attended by Claude Debussy, André Gide, Paul Valéry, Francis Jammes, Paul Claudel, and others. What we have here, as so often with Vuillard, is not so much a personal portrait-for the lady stands at farthest distance from the artist and turns away from him-as it is the portrait of a refined ambience, opulent yet distinguished.
