Description: "At the Seashore, 1905" Source: Vuillard, published in 1968 Description Title: "Three women held dominating positions in Vuillard's life. First and fore- most his mother-he called her his "muse"-with whom he lived until her death in 1928. Then, for a few brief years late in the 1890s, the bewitching, capricious Misia Natanson breached the defenses of his heart. Last, from 1900 on, he enjoyed an almost lover-like intimacy with Madame Jos Hessel, his dealer's wife, who in her quasi-maternal way virtually ran his life. This great friendship even aroused a slight jealousy on the part of the ever-devoted Madame Vuillard. Lucie Hessel, portrayed here at Amfreville in Normandy, had a robust, ardent, affectionate nature, and with her splendid efficiency and optimism energized his whole existence. She protected him and promoted his work, took him on trips abroad, had him to stay in the summer, entertained him almost every evening in Paris, and, after his mother's death, made a home for him at Les Clayes, her country house near Versailles. Some observers thought he occasionally chafed under her dominating ways, but on the whole he submitted to them willingly enough. Vuillard painted innumerable portraits of Madame Hessel, among which this rosy, summery evocation is perhaps the most charming. It convincingly demonstrates her personal fascination."
