She was a self-described "black, lesbian, socialist, mother, warrior, poet," who dedicated her life and talents to confronting all forms of injustice, as she believed there could be no "hierarchy of oppressions." As a poet, Lorde is well known for her technical mastery and emotional expression, as well as her poems that express anger and outrage at civil and social injustices she observed throughout her life. As a spoken word artist, her delivery has been called powerful, melodic, and intense by the Poetry Foundation. Her poems and prose largely deal with issues related to civil rights, feminism, lesbianism, illness and disability, and the exploration of black female identity. In 1968, Lorde published The First Cities, her FIRST volume of poems. It was edited by Diane di Prima (1934-2020), a former classmate and friend from Hunter College High School. The First Cities has been described as a "quiet, introspective book," and Dudley Randall, a poet and critic, asserted that Lorde, "does not wave a black flag, but her Blackness is there, implicit, in the bone." Incredibly scarce work - this is the only known copy being sold at time of listing. Important American pioneer for intersectional feminist poetry. COLPAP-104801/24 - HK1105
