Following its tremendous success with the GT40 Mark II at the 1966 with a 1-2-3 podium sweep, Ford Motor Company took a different approach to the 1967 race. The 1967 GT40 Mark IV was designed and built entirely in the United States employing aluminum honeycomb to construct the monocoque, an advanced manufacturing technique derived from the aerospace industry. The Mark IV also employed advanced aerodynamics, resulting in a low-drag body that looked significantly different compared to the Mark II and capable of speeds well over 200 miles per hour at Le Mans' Mulsanne Straight. The red #1 GT40 Mark IV was prepared and entered into the 1967 race by Shelby American. The car was powered by Ford's big block 7-liter (427 cubic inches) V8 and piloted by Americans Dan Gurney and A. J. Foyt. The #1 GT40 Mark IV won the race, completing 388 laps and covering a distance of 3251 miles at an average speed of 135.4 miles per hour. The Ford beat the 2nd place Ferrari 330 P4 by a convincing 4-lap margin. New engine regulations for 1968 rendered the GT40 Mark IV and Mark II obsolete. However, the early design GT40 Mark I with its smaller engine would go on to victory at Le Mans in 1968 and 1969, continuing Ford's dominance.
