From the introduction: "Silversmithing had been an actively practiced art and mystery in New England for nearly a hundred years before New Haven, one of Connecticut's richest and most prosperous towns, had a silversmith of its own. New Haven's first native to follow the craft, John Dixwell (1680-1725). He was patronized by nearby churches and examples of his work are, or once were, owned by churches in Bridgeport, Guilford, Middletown, and Milford, as well as New Haven. The Society owns a fine snuff box bearing the Dixwell arms that is supposed to have belonged to him, but it surely was not made by him since it bears the maker's brand G.S. and two lions passant guardant in the form used in London. The Town's first silversmith - and Connecticut's also incidentally - was Job Prince who came to Milford from Hull or Boston, Massachusetts.The inventory of his estate in the Probate Records at New Haven City Hall includes a set of silversmith's tools and bellows as well as a silver tankard, porringer, tobacco box, buckles, and spoons.
