View from the top - This massive excavation deep within Cheyenne Mountain, south of Colorado Springs, was necessary to house the huge steel, three-story buildings of North American Air Defense Command's underground combat operations center. This view, taken from the third-floor level on one of the 11 buildings, is one of the main chambers, just over 60 feet high and 45 feed wide. Studding the rock face are some of the approximately 90,000 rock bolts used to stabilize the surface of the cut. The bolts - some of them more than 30 feet long - return the strength of the granite to what is was before the excavation and help prevent the rock walls from creeping back into the hollowed out chambers. Stretched over the rock bolts, a curtain of steel mesh prevents particles of rock from falling should they scale from the walls or ceiling. Photo measures 8 x 9.75 inches. Photo is dated 10-20-1966.
