The book was inscribed to "Doug & Helen..." and this book was purchased from the estate of Helen, with Helen confirming the signature and inscription. On Brent Bishop from the internet: "Brent Bishop, the son of the late legendary climber Barry Bishop, was the first American legacy to follow in his father’s footsteps and summit Mt. Everest. Brent first reached the summit of Everest in 1994, and again climbed the mountain in the 2002, with the National Geographic Mt. Everest Expedition that marked the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of the mountain. National Geographic produced the documentary, Surviving Everest, based on this climb. In 1994 Brent co-founded, the Sagarmatha Environmental Expedition (SEE), an organization committed to cleaning trash off the slopes of Everest. Brent has run SEE since 1994, and since its inception, the organization has removed more than 25,000 pounds of trash from the mountain. Brent attempted Everest’s West Ridge with an Eddie Bauer sponsored team in 2012. Recently in 2016 he summited Everest with a virtual reality camera as part of a Sports Illustrated production." An online synopsis and review of the book: "IN this volume, James Ramsey Ulman presents the official account of the 1963 American Mount Everest Expedition which succeeded in putting six climbers on the summit. Four of the climbers used the South Col route that the British first climbed successfully in 1953 and the Swiss in 1956. The other two climbers, however, pioneered an entirely new route up the West Ridge. They traversed the summit and descended by the South Col route. This time, a professional writer has been called in to present the story, even though he was unable to be present during the actual climbs. Mr. Ullman has written extensively on mountains, especially on Everest. The results are mixed. I think that the largest expeditions present a very real problem to their chroniclers. There are so many people to introduce, so many credits to give, so many comings and goings to keep straight, and so many operations and sub‐operations to describe. (How the leader, Norman Dyhrenfurth, for instance, raised over $400,000, would take a volume in itself.) Inevitably the story gets somewhat submerged. Mr. Ullman is a skillful writer and after each long digression he recoups nobly. Still it is a slow start. When the climbers actually come to grips with the mountain, the pace picks up. Partly this is because of the intrinsic excitement of the events themselves. The reader's heart is lifted when big Jim Whittaker and little Gombu set off for the summit on an impossible day of wind and blowing snow and come back down having done the impossible. Or again, thereader is moved by the spirit of the West Ridge group which surmounts a storm that almost blows them off the mountain, carries two of them past the point of no return to the summit, sustains them through an incredible night out without tents or sleeping‐bags, and finally, when the warming beauty of the dawn comes, starts them down to safety. Partly, also, this is because Mr. Ullman manages his material well." B143
