Description: 1964-1965 "INCO" 25C Niobium Quarter Blank RB-5305 Private Pattern NGC Brilliant Uncirculated, R.7 rarity. Despite being labeled as "INCO", this piece was in fact made by the Union Carbide company, which was a direct competitor of INCO in the race to influence the composition of U.S. coinage upon the impending switch away from silver in 1965. In contrast with INCO, which was fighting for nickel-based coinage, Union Carbide championed Niobium as the base for the new U.S. coinage. According to Private Pattern and Related Pieces: International Nickel & Gould Incorporated by Roger Burdette, Niobium had been studied by the Treasury as "a coinage material in the 50-cent piece and as a cladding material for dimes and quarters". More on the connection between Union Carbide and the proposed Niobium coinage can be found here: https://uspatterns.com/19paco.html A showpiece for the advanced private pattern collection, this is a real conversation piece that very few other collectors will have heard anything about. It is also extremely rare, as one of only 3 surviving examples of the original Niobium test blanks.
