Gunlocke Chair Company began operations in 1902. By 1912 the company began producing furniture using steam bending of wooden components. By 1920 the company concentrated on the production of contract seating and later federal government installations. In 1969 the company was reorganized and the name changed to The Gunlocke Company.The 21-C chair was described in an old catalogue as "These chairs are designed for comfort in the office, conference room, and reception room. A sturdy chair constructed to exceed all expectations."The walnut chair frame features curved or bent armrests continuous to the back panel that supports the vinyl covered back cushion. The seat cushion is boxed and self piped with the matching vinyl of the back cushion. A woven looped fabric is used on the top of the seat cushion.The chair is marked in white stenciling on the underside. "AAC-00400B" refers to the federal specification of the chair frame with latex foam seat and back . "GS-00S-55333" refers to the identification number of the government contract order. "Gunlocke 1/66" probably refers to a January 1966 production date. There are also three additional paper labels and the inserted Gunlocke medallion.The chair measures 23 5/8" in width, 24 5/8" in depth, and 29 3/8" in height. The arm height is 21 5/8". The seat height with cushion is 17".The wood frame is offered in unrestored condition. The photographs will show crazing on the surface and rubbing to the finish at the arms and minor dings and surface scratches consistent to age and use. The seat cushion fabric is worn at the front edge. The chair weighs approximately 36 pounds with solid construction.
