Description: This piece is very hard to take pictures of. We don't have a wall space to hang it. Too many paintings at home. The glass frame picks up everything. The spots you see in the lower part of the painting are from the rug. They are not in the art work. As you can see from the photos of the work without the frame.James Coignard (1925-2008) is a well know French Abstract Expressionist Artist and printmaker recognized for his colorful, geometric abstractions and exceptional carborundum etchings. The artist's keen interest in mathematics is evident in all his paintings and etchings. These elegant, rich, tactile pieces of art are done on a heavy cotton fiber with a rough, organic and visible texture that has to be seen in person to be fully appreciated.Coignard studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Nice and subsequently apprenticed with the painter Marchand des Raux. After developing a relationship with a gallery in Nice in the 1950's. Coignard began to gain some notoriety. Distinguishing himself as a talented painter, sculptor and etcher, he began to exhibit internationally. His artwork is now in numerous corporate and private collections as well as over 20 museums including the the Guggenheim in NYC and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris.
