1960’s-Cold War US Navy BuAer Leather G-1 Leather Flight Jacket, RADM Costello

Description: 1960s-Cold War U.S. Navy BuAer Leather G-1 Flight Jacket, size 42, featuring a leather name tape for RADM Edward J. Costello sewn onto the left breast. The jacket dates to the mid-late 1950s and has a contract tag marked SPEC 55J14 (AER). The contract tag is hanging by a few threads, the size tag is rolled and fragile, and the contract tag in the right front pocket is washed out. There is some loss to the fur on the collar, and the jacket shows heavier wear, including cracking in the leather and wear to the wool cuffs. REAR ADMIRAL EDWARD J. COSTELLO, JR. SUPPLY CORPS, U.S. NAVAL RESERVE, RETIRED Edward James Costello, Jr., was born in Verona, Pennsylvania, on August 7, 1899, son of Edward J. and Myrtle Trees (Palmer) Costello. He attended St. Joseph's School, Pittsburgh Academy and the University of Pittsburgh. Appointed Lieutenant in the U. S. Naval Reserve, to rank from May 7, 1936, he advanced in rank to that of Rear Admiral in the Supply Corps of the U. S. Naval Reserve, to date from July 1, 1960. On October 1, 1963 he was placed on the Naval Reserve Retired List, effective September 1, 1959. Reporting for active duty on June 13, 1941, he served for two years as Officer in Charge, Naval Supply Depot Annex, Army Base, at the Navy Supply Depot, Norfolk, Virginia, and was on duty there the outbreak of World War II in December 1941. From June 1943 until March 1944 he was Supply Officer of the U. S. Naval Operating Base, Midway Island, and for eleven months thereafter served as Squadron Supply Officer on the Staff of Commander Service Squadron TWELVE. He was briefly attached to the Service Force, Pacific Fleet, and April of 1945 reported as Supply and Accounting Officer at the Naval Powder Factory, Indian Head, Maryland. He remained there until March 1946, following the cessation of hostilities and after a period of terminal leave was released from active duty, July 3, 1946. Participating in the Naval Reserve Program, he had training duty in the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Navy Department, Washington, D. C., as a Selection Board Member, in February 1952 and again in February and March 1959. He completed the "Field Economic Mobilization Course" at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Washington, D. C., and the "Senior Reserve Officers Course, 1958" at the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island. Admiral Costello has the Naval Reserve Medal with one star (for over twenty years' service); the American Defense Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; and the World War II Victory Medal. Married to the former Helen Virginia Delaney of Clarksburg, West Virginia, Admiral Costello has one son, Edward James Costello, III. The family residence is 5318 McKinley Street, Bethesda, Maryland. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers; Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers; Army-Navy Club of Washington, D. C.; Whitehall Club, New York; New York Athletic Club; the Moles; Wheeling Country Club; Building Code Committee; and the American Iron and Steel Institute. He has been president of the R. E. Wilson Chapter of the Naval Reserve Officers Association and Cormanding Officer of Reserve Company 5-8, Washington, D. C. Condition: II-
