PSA CardFacts excerpt: ‘Palmer Edward “Pete” Retzlaff (August 21, 1931-) (RB/WR/TE) never caught a single pass during his college career at South Dakota State College and set NAIA records for both shot-put and discus for the Jackrabbits. Pete rushed, return kicks and punted in college before the Detroit Lions took him in the 22nd round of the 1953 NFL Draft. Retzlaff was unable to make the 1953 team and then served two years in the United States Army. After serving his country, he returned to the Lions, but was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he would play his entire career (1956-1966). In 1958, Pete caught a league-leading 56 passes for 766 yards and two touchdowns and earned his first of five NFL Pro Bowl appearances. Retzlaff’s best year came in 1965 when he caught 66 passes for 1,190 yards and ten TDs and was named an NFL All-Pro First Team player and the Bert Bell Player of the Year. Pete Retzlaff was the President of the NFL Players Association from 1962 to 1964 and finished his career with 7,412 receiving yards and 47 touchdowns on 452 catches. Following his playing career, Retzlaff served as Vice President and General Manager for the Eagles from 1968 to 1972.’ Pete Retzlaff is a member of the Eagles Hall of Fame, having been inducted in 1989. His number, 44, is one of only nine retired by the Eagles. Retzlaff was a tight end who played for the Eagles from 1956 to 1966.
