Brownlee Dam - Snake River. Power-producing facilities will be completed today at giant Brownlee Dam (above) in the famed Hells Canyon reach of the Snake River. The fourth generator goes "on the line" at Idaho Power Company's new project, bringing its entire initial capacity of 360,000 kilowatts into full production and establishing it among the major power-generating installations in the Pacific Northwest. Now completed except for finishing touches, Brownlee is the first project of a three-dam development in which Idaho Power already has invested more than $110,000,000. The other two projects in the development, licensed by the Federal Power Commission, are Oxbow Dam, now well along toward completion next year, and Hells Canyon Dam, which will be built following completion of Oxbow. Brownlee's massive rockfill embankment, second-highest in the world, is seen in this dramatic aerial photo stretching between Idaho (left) and Oregon. The man-made mountain is flanked at right by the spillway, a concrete structure 14 stories high. Brownlee's powerhouse is located in a deep rock cut chiseled from lava rock, just below the Idaho end of the embankment at left. Nearly a mile upstream in the reservoir is the project's unique and experimental downstream-migrant fish facility, part of a multimillion-dollar system that will conserve both upstream and downstream migrants at the new projects.Photo measures 10 x 8.25inches.
