The original railroad, the Baltimore & Sparrows Point Railroad Co., was incorporated in 1887; its line was constructed from Colgate Creek to Penwood Park in Sparrows Point, a distance of 5.46 miles. It opened for operation in 1889. The P&BR, which takes its name from the Patapsco River to the west and the Back River to the east, was officially established in 1918. It reached its peak of operations during the operation of the steel mill by Bethlehem and US Steel but today is but a skeleton of its former self. The Pittsburgh & West Virginia Railroad (P&WV), a small railroad serving the steel mills and coal mines around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and in adjacent areas of Ohio and West Virginia. It operated between 1916-1967. For auction is a LOT of 2 demand checks from the P&WV to the P&BR dated March 21, 1958 and July 17, 1958; they were for interline per-diem car charges. The checks measure appx 8 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches and are printed on medium-weight paperstock. Both are is in very good condition, with no rips or tears. All writing/markings are from its issuance and processing. There is a small rust stain on one check from an old paperclip used by the railroad. A nice item for the Maryland railfan. Images sell!
