Description: Up for sale, a 1958 Fender Precision Bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Featuring a body-only and very faithful nitro lacquer refinish, this bass has all the hallmarks of the second year where the Precision Bass would gain its now iconic split coil pickup configuration, including the raised A string pole piece pickup, and a one-piece maple neck with a slender, effortless C-shaped profile carve. Delivering a broad natural acoustic tone that’s effortlessly rich and articulate in equal measure, this bass boasts the distinctive note attack and treble-centric articulation of the maple fretboard, paired with an alder body that yields a tone that's even-sounding and smooth. The low end is muscly and robust, and the bass is currently strung with flatwound D'Addario Chromes 45-100 strings. Well-balanced on a strap and lightweight at 7lbs 14oz, this vintage Precision Bass has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with accurate intonation, comfortable action, and jaw-dropping tone. The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with nicely rounded shoulders that aren’t too overt, and rolled fingerboard edges (particularly on the treble side), measuring .780" deep at the 1st fret and .980" at the 12th. The fretboard has been lightly oversprayed and refretted with vintage-spec slender fretwire which has good meat for its size and exhibits only faint wear on the crowns of frets 1-5. The bass plays cleanly up the 34" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The original nut measures 1.72" (just shy of 1 3/4") in width. The headstock retains the original waterslide decal and set of reverse geared long stem clover button tuning machines. The neck heel is pencil dated 7-58. The original split coil black bobbin pickup with raised A pole pieces is present, wired to a harness with a vintage replica "phone book" tone capacitor and a pair of replacement CTS pots that date to 1999. The original 6/58 body date is intact beneath the pickup shielding plate. All of the original hardware is intact, including the bridge bass with distinctive squared-off back edges, spiral saddles, knurled metal knobs, neck plate with "0" prefix only seen from 1957-58, and of course the stock gold anodized pickguard. The body has been refinished in a nitro lacquer “2.5 Burst” faithfully replicating the diffused red central ring on Fender's early three-tone Sunbursts. Cosmetic wear is limited to a spot of faint localized buckle wear just south of the belly carve, and only a few additional minor marks on the body as a whole. There is also an unusual small hole through the neck plate and extending to the body. The original nitro lacquer on the neck profile shows prominent checking and various small marks on the profile length, largely worn smooth from contact with the palm. The original tweed center latch "knucklebuster" case is included, retaining its trio of latches and the stock handle. The case is deeply ambered and exhibits plenty of wear, and "Fisher" is silkscreened on the inside lid and bottom of the case.
