Starts Searching Atlantic - Bulging with electronic eyes that will keep watch for strange craft in the air or on the seas off US Atlantic Coast, this huge Lockheed RC-121 "early warning" radar plane provides a seldom seen view of its radome-sprouting underside, as it takes off directly over the cameraman's head. The US Air Force activated its first RC-121 squadron today (March 2) at Otis AFB, MA, where the "planes with the high IQ" will be teamed with Lockheed F-94C Starfire interceptors to spot and challenge any unidentified intruders. Radar planes are in constant communication with shore bases to summon interceptors to the attack if suspected craft cannot prove their identity. That black radome beneath the fuselage carries a revolving antenna which transmits protective radar beams over greater areas, farther out from US Shores, than was ever possible with surface radar. A fin-like radome with another huge antenna sits atop the plane's fuselage, and other electronic beams pour from the plane's black tipped nose. On the wingtips are extra fuel tanks to give the far-flying sentinel planes added range and endurance. They carry the largest crew in the air - up to 31 men.Photo measures 10 x 8.25inches.
