Carey, President of the International Union of Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations), is shown as he told newsmen today that he has made a personal appeal to President Eisenhower to intercede in the nine-week-old strike against the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, by 55,000 union employees. Carey said that he had contacted Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell to act but failed to win government intercession. Carey said that he couldn't see how the strike can continue without government interesting itself. Both sides in the dispute have been deadlocked over wage and working conditions.
