With the loading of the first shipload of iron ore from Cerro Bolivar on January 9, 1954, Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, became an important world port. Within two years the jungle at the confluence of the Caroni and Orinoco Rivers was transformed by Orinoco Mining Company into this plant for loading iron ore into ocean vessels at the rate of 6,000 long tons per hour. Modern housing, schools, a hospital and other facilities for a thriving city have been established nearby. The ore handling system, furnished and installed by Link-Belt Company as prime contractor, unloads railroad cars at the rate of 67 per hour, crushes the ore, transports it by belt conveyor to a 470,000-ton capacity stockpile and later reclaims it, conveys as needed to the dock and loads it into ocean-going ships.
