Bombs - Hydrogen. Slim metal tanks point skyward at the world's first hydrogen bomb plant, now under construction along the South Carolina shore of the Savannah river, near Augusta, Georgia. This is the first picture of construction of the industrial plant to be approved for publication by the Atomic Energy Commission. It was snapped by Ira Rosenberg of the New York Herald Tribune from the window of a train passing within half a mile of the scene. The project is classed as top secret by President Truman and the public is kept outside the restricted area by barbed wire (foreground) The plant is being built by the E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, Incorporated, at a cost reported to be over one billion dollars and is on a 202,000-acre reservation.Photo measures 10 x 5.75inches. Photo is dated 3-11-1952.
