Description: Are you a tea lover? You'll appreciate this rare J. K. Smithson Tea tin. A tea tin, from the same James Smithson who was the benefactor of the Washington, DC Smithsonian museums, the nautical container was used to ship tea from the East India Tea Company. Although undated, the tin probably was manufactured in the 1950s. Smithson is pictured in his naval uniform on two sides of the box, while the lid and additional sides show a merchant clipper ship in full sail. Interestingly though Smithson was a great benefactor of the United States, he had never visited the US and had no known ties to America. Through the influence of then President John Quincy Adams, Smithson who was a grocer and importer as well as a scientist, funded the Smithson buildings. The tin, which measures 3.75" tall and 4.25" square, is in excellent food ready condition, with just a small dimple at the bottom of the sailing ship on the lid. This box is ready for your loose tea or teabags. Celebrate tea!
