John Gunther (1901-1970) was a best selling American novelist of the twentieth century. In a break from his normal best-selling content, "Death Be Not Proud" is a memoir about the death of Gunther's son, Johnny, to a brain tumor. The book is arranged into two parts: Part one depicting the diagnosis and treatment of Johnny, and Part two containing additional letters and diary entries of Johnny, as well as an essay from his mother, Frances Gunther. The book was almost not published because the publishers, Harper and Brothers, believed no one would buy it, and that it would in bad taste to profit off of a story about loss. They finally agreed to publish the book on the condition that all proceeds would benefit cancer research. The book sold rapidly, was translated into multiple languages, and changed the rules about what should be discussed in the public sphere. "Death Be Not Proud" is a national treasure, and this early edition is a unique piece. RAREA1949ABDK09/23-HK685
