We Gladly Combine Multiple Maps and Prints Description: It is an original antique map approximately 78 years old. It is from the Maine General Highway Atlas created by the Maine State Highway Commission Planning Survey Division in cooperation with the Public Roads Administration Federal Works Agency (Augusta, Maine, 1946), a copy of the title page is included, see pics. The map is actually dated 1938, revised to 1945 in small print at the bottom. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet with Piscataquis, Sagadahoc and Somerset County Cities on one side and Waldo and Washington County Cities on the other. US Highway System: It is a rare map from a large format atlas that was published by the state of Maine along with the help of the Federal government, which after WWII began to review US highways and became involved in helping states to improve their highway conditions that had been neglected partly due to two world wars. Basically, the US had outgrown its roads and throughout the 1940s and 50s there was an intense campaign to revamp them. At first, most of the responsibility fell upon the individual states and cities and then eventually the federal goverment stepped in with the passing of Eisenhower's National Defense Highway Act, also know as the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 ($27 billion) which would create the Interstate Highway System. This map is from the 1946 atlas that was created by the survey and shows various surfaces including dirt, graded, gravel, bituminous (coal) and paved, as well as city populations and other details. We also currently have listed some similar maps from the Michigan Survey as well. Size: The entire page measures 18 by 24 1/2 inches (47x62cm) Condition: Fair. There is a soft bend down the center, red dampstains that bled through from the cover, the spiral binding has wear, a couple of soft creases, edge wear with a few nicks and minor tears, badly creased bottom corner about to detach and light backprinting. The cities could be cropped out and framed separately, see the pics for more on condition.
