This original newspaper contains a prominent front page black "mourning" border and news of the sudden DEATH of PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D ROOSEVELT and the ascent of VP Harry Truman to the Presidency. Most interestingly, a front page article reports that Truman is quoted as saying at that moment that (the) "...Weight of the Moon and Stars Fell On Me Last Night..." (when he learned of the death of Franklin D Roosevelt and his becoming the new President of the US). Harry S. Truman (May 8, 1884 – December 26, 1972) was the 33rd president of the United States, serving from 1945 to 1953. A lifetime member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as a US Senator from the State of Missouri from 1935 to 1945. He was chosen as incumbent President Franklin D. Roosevelt's running mate for the 1944 presidential election. Truman was inaugurated as vice-president in 1945 and served for less than three months until President Roosevelt died. On his first full day as President, Truman told reporters: "Boys, if you ever pray, pray for me now. I don't know if you fellas ever had a load of hay fall on you, but when they told me what happened yesterday, I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me." Now serving as president, Truman implemented the Marshall Plan to rebuild the economy of Western Europe and established both the Truman Doctrine and NATO to contain the expansion of communism. He proposed numerous liberal domestic reforms, but few were enacted by the Conservative Coalition that dominated the Congress. Very good condition.
