Taking another step forward to solve the deadly dilemma of those who are adrift -- "water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink" -- the U.S. Naval Medical Research Institute at Bethesda, Md., has developed a new and simplified method of desalinating sea water to make it fit to drink. Known as the Permutit-NMRI method, the process consists of dropping a brick about the size of a bar of soap into a plastic bag containing sea water. The bag is kneaded for a few minutes. In about 20 minutes the chemicals in the brick have done their work and the water is safe to drink. It has an odd but not unpalatable taste. The briquette is unwrapped.
