A working model for America's mobilizing Women's Army Auxiliary corps has been functioning in Canada with all-feminine efficiency for 8 months. Under the gray eyes of attractive Senior Comdr. Joan Kennedy (right) the Canadian women's army has grown to 6,000 strong, about equally divided between army and air force. Setting a pattern, the WAAC plans to follow, the women of the Canadian army are not concerned with actual fighting tasks but rather with auxiliary work that will release men for the real jobs of combat. They come from all stations of life, occupy various ranks from commander (as Mrs. Kennedy) down to "volunteer," equivalent to private in the U.S. Once enlisted they may have to forget their special abilities in civilian life, pitch in wherever they're assigned. No less than the male recruit, they're in the army, no mistaking it. These pictures present samples of the life they've chosen.
