Conrad Heroine-By taking the leading feminine role in Paramount's filmization of the Joseph Conrad novel, "Victory," right from under the screen tests of a bevy of Hollywood's more accomplished actresses, Betty Field distinguished herself by taking a prized acting plum for the second time in less than a year. But then, she's been doing things like that since she presented--at the age of nine on a hotel lawn in Bryson, North Carolina--a condensed version of "The Taming of the Shrew." She played almost all the parts. It was just a year ago that Betty came to Hollywood, a youngster with a Broadway reputation. She made her film debut in "What a Life!" and astonished everybody by getting the top feminine part in "Of Mice and Men." Then she appeared in "Seventeen," returned to New York for a play, and then back to Hollywood for "Victory." Born in Boston, Miss Field traveled widely with her parents until she settled down to becoming an actress. She was graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Art in 1932 and promptly went to London with "She Love's Me Not." After that Betty stayed quite busy on the New York stage in plays like "Page Miss Glory," "Three Men on a Island," "What A Life" and "The Primrose Path." Then, in April, 1939, Paramount lured her to Hollywood for her first screen appearance, and now Betty is pretty comfortably settled in a contract that enables her to divide her time between Hollywood and Broadway. She'll do one more picture after "Victory" before returning to New York.Photo measures 8 x 10inches. Photo is dated 11-23-1940.
