Description: For sale is a 1940 proof mercury dime, certified by NGC & graded PF66, high investment grade early proof. The proof mercury dime was only minted for seven years, starting in 1936. For the 1940 series they minted 11,827, a significant increase from prior years making it the third highest mintage for the proof dime series. Still low numbers as far as mintage numbers go imo, and in the following years, 1941 & 42 the numbers grew even more. In 1941 they minted 16,557 & in 42 they almost doubled it at 22,329. Due to the outbreak of WW2, 1942 was the last year of production for all U.S. proof coins until 1950. The slab that houses this beautiful coin is a pre barcode slab, introduced in 1990 with the hologram sticker on the back to provide greater protection against counterfeit holders. The hologram on this slab is completely intact & the slab looks like it's new from the factory, free of any chips or scratches, making this an even better investment or addition to your collection. Being over 30 years old these slabs are usually scratched up and cloudy & the hologram is almost always stripped off at least alittle bit from coins changing hands, which this one didn't travel much, it's been tucked away in a private collection until its owner passed away a year ago. A beautiful, lustrous, high grade example this coin is completely problem free & I can't find a mark on it. I hate to say a coin is undergraded cause I'm obviously no grader but my inspections of this coin came up empty as far as being able to find a mark on it. Except for the original toning on the coin, is the only marks I see. I like original toned coins because in my opinion, all white coins look alike, but tone & color add character, make the coin one of a kind and also make it easy to spot your coin among others. Let's be real, alot of ppl steal coins nowadays unfortunately and I like to be able to spot my coin if it's broken from a holder and tone helps me identify my coin, in a holder or not. Anyways, proof mercury dimes are beautiful and awesome pieces of history, minted in low numbers at a time when America was at war and the future was uncertain. Seems crazy to me that stuff made in 1990 and before are considered "vintage" now, but they are. Making this old fatty holder vintage and not only the slab being mint condition, the coin is as well, don't miss your chance to tuck this fine specimen away in your collection! Thanks for looking, and if your still reading this, I'm always open to offers, feel free to message me with any offers or questions and I'd be glad to work with you. Have a blessed day
