Description: "Portrait of Mrs. Siddons" by Thomas Gainsborough Source: World Famous Paintings, published in 1939 Description Title: "SARAH KEMBLE SIDDONS, the eldest of twelve children of Roger Kemble, was born in a public house at Brecon, Wales, in 1755. At the age of eighteen she married William Siddons. Her first important impression on the stage was made at Cheltenham in Artway's "Venice Preserved.” The people of “quality” who came to laugh, departed in tears. Garrick, hearing of her success, employed her to appear at Drury Lane at a salary of five pounds a week. Her greatest triumph was as Isabella in Garrick's version of Southerne's "Fatal Marriage." Mrs. Siddons' most famed role was Lady Macbeth, to the tragedy of which her stature, her shining beauty, and the dignity of her demeanor lent moving power. Mrs. Siddons had the friendship and respect of her most eminent con- temporaries. And Dr. Johnson, as a dramatic gesture of homage, inscribed his name on the hem of her garment in that portrait of her by Reynolds in which she appears as the "Tragic Muse." Mrs. Siddons died in London in 1831." Unique and distinctive.
