Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Available for sale is an original, hard cover copy of the Review and Album from the 1938 International Live Stock Exhibition that was held in Chicago November 26th through December 3, 1938. An annual event, Chicago’s International Live Stock Exposition was the largest such show in the world. Competing for valuable cash prizes were cattle, sheep, swine, and draft horses that had previously won top honors at state and regional fairs. In addition to the livestock judging contests, there were horse shows every evening, agricultural displays, farm-related educational exhibits, 4-H events, etc. The Exposition was held in Chicago’s International Amphitheater which was once located next to the Union Stock Yard. Following the close of each “International,” a Review and Album would be published which listed all the participants in the various judging events. Prize-winning animals and their owners received special coverage including full-page photos. The names of the participants and the winning contestants in the evening horse shows along with their photos were also published. There were also sections which describe the educational and government displays, summarized the various reviews and comments about the Exposition that appeared in various newspapers and magazines, described radio’s coverage of the International, etc. At the album’s back would be ads for various stock farms and cattle ranches where animals produced from prize-winning stock could be purchased. (Looking up these advertisers on the internet can turn up all sorts of interesting historical information.) The 1938 International was particularly memorable because, for the first time in its history, the grand champion steer was raised and exhibited by 14-year-old farm girl Irene Brown from Aledo, Illinois. (There are some fascinating on-line articles about Irene Brown and what became of her in later years.) This copy comes from a non-smoking household and is being sold "as is." The binding is tight and there are no loose pages. The pages in the back half of this album show signs of moisture damage along their right-hand edges, and the lower right-hand corners of some of these damaged pages have been trimmed away. Even so, this is a perfectly adequate reading copy which contains a lot of interesting and historic information. 354 pages measuring 8” x 5-1/2” and containing many, many outstanding black and white livestock photos. This copy will be shipped via USPS media mail with tracking and insurance. (Foreign buyers please use eBay’s Global Shipping Service.) We’ve provided ample photo coverage it, so please study the images closely as they are an important part of the listing description. Original copies of the Review and Album from the 1938 International Live Stock Exhibition seldom if ever turn up on eBay or at ABE Books. (Most copies are now prized family heirlooms.) This copy has been priced to sell with free shipping within the U.S. If you collect books and other memorabilia on livestock and livestock shows, don’t let this copy get away from you because someone bought it while you were still thinking about buying it.
