The History of the Colony andProvince of Massachusetts-Bay BY THOMAS HUTCHINSON LONDON: HUMPHREY MILFORDOXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS EDITED FROM THE AUTHOR'S OWN COPIES OF VOLUMESI AND II AND HIS MANUSCRIPT OF VOLUME III,WITH A MEMOIR AND ADDITIONAL NOTES BY LAWRENCE SHAW MAYO VERO TẶS CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS HARVARD UNIVERSITY PRESS 1936 EDITOR'S PREFACE TO VOLUME III THE preparation of the present edition of volume III has been largelya matter of collating the text of the edition of 1828 with GovernorHutchinson's manuscript. Where the earlier editor changed thephraseology or spelling to suit the literary style of his time, I havesubstituted the author's version. But for practical reasons I havefollowed the capitalization of the editor of 1828. From the pointof view of the twentieth century Governor Hutchinson's use ofcapital letters was excessive; and though the editor of the earlynineteenth century went to the other extreme, I decided to adopthis practice in this detail. The text of the Appendix has been carried over bodily, spellingand all, from the edition of 1828. It does not appear in the author'smanuscript, for it was compiled by his grandson, the ReverendJohn Hutchinson, the first editor of volume III. Governor Hutch-inson made notes in the manuscript, indicating what material wasto be used in the Appendix; but circumstances prevented him fromtranscribing the documents. That work, which was no easy task, was faithfully done by his grandson, to whom consequently I ammuch indebted. The gratitude I feel towards Mr. Alfred Clark Chapin, whowisely purchased Governor Hutchinson's own copies of volumes Iand II and the manuscript of volume III and generously made themaccessible to students of American history, is deep and enduring. My appreciation extends also to Miss Lucy E. Osborne, the gra-cious custodian of the Chapin Library of Rare Books. L. S. M. CONTENTS. Page CHAP. I. -From the Year 1749, to the end of Governor Pownal'sAdministration in the Year 1760 .CHAP.
