1935 Farmers Mass Meeting in Washington D.C. Supporting FDR Train Original Photo

Description: Size: 7x10 inch Condition: All photos in this series are in good to excellent condition for their age, unless otherwise outlined here. Photos of any major imperfections will be included. Special trains bear about 3,000 farms into Washington to attend a mass meeting - one in support of the Administration. It is one of the few times in history that an organized group of this size has visited the Nation's Capital to tell the president how good he is. 5/14/35 Harris & Ewing photos. In May 1935, a significant gathering took place as farmers mobilized in support of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal policies. This event highlighted the challenges faced by agricultural communities during the Great Depression and illustrated the farmers' desire for government support. The meeting not only aimed to show solidarity with the Administration but also to advocate for policies that would benefit rural America. The farmers' demonstrations and activism in Washington D.C. contributed to legislative changes that would improve their economic situation over time, showcasing the powerful impact grassroots movements can have on national policy. === This 7x10 inch original type 1 (from original negative) photograph is from the personal collection of photographer Wes Howland (1906-1956). Howland was a reporter with the Harris-Ewing news service in Washington D.C from 1931-1941, and went on to serve with the military. He was one of a small number of photographers with complete access to the White House, Capitol, Senate, and House. This photo was part of a collection of over 1200 large photos from Wes Howland personal archive that we acquired from his estate. Included with the lot was the following note from a relative: "Periodically he would send his glossys to his mother. Soon after (joining the Marines) the newspaper of Harris & Ewing went out of business. As far as I know, the hundreds of pictures he took and sent his mother are one of a kind, and the only ones in existence. No prints have ever been made. I inherited them from my grandmother." Not only did Mr Howland have incredible access to the government figures of the day but he was a highly skilled photographer who produced some stunning historical images and documented Washington D.C. in the 1930s like few others.
