Description: This is an old check, dated May 19, 1932, paid by the office of the Sheriff of Roane County, which was located in Spencer, West Virginia. The sheriff at that time was Norville Jones; however, he did not sign this check. This is a nice looking check, with an image printed on the front of Judge Spencer Roane (1762-1822), for whom the county was named. The check is a payment of $6 to a man named Eldridge Engle, who signed the back of the check (see scans for signatures etc.) This man may be the same Eldridge Engle (1866-1943) who is buried in Amma Cemetery in Roane County, West Virginia. The front of the check is signed by two men. One of the men was Charles A. Lynch, who is identified as being "President". It is not clear from the context of the check what exactly Lynch was president of; he may have been president of one of the banks whose inkstamp is imprinted on the check, or he may have had the title "President" as a result of some local community or political office. Whatever the source of his title as president may have been, I believe that this man was Charles Addison Lynch (1863-1953), who is buried in Looney Cemetery, in the town of Walton, located in Roane County, West Virginia. The check is also signed by a clerk named "R. L. McCulty". This was Roy Lee McCulty (1889-1968). He was the Roane County court clerk. McCulty also worked in the field of banking, and had earlier been a teacher. He fought overseas during World War I, and returned to the United States in 1919. In later years, McCulty was a bank director; the secretary-treasurer of the Spencer Livestock Exchange Co., and also of the Ritchie County Livestock Sales Co.; an executive in the oil and gas business; a member of the West Virginia State House of Delegates from Roane County, from 1943 to 1954; and a member of the West Virginia State Senate, 4th District, from 1957 to 1960. His father was a a Methodist minister named Henry S. McCulty (1864-1943). The check is in very good condition, with multiple inkstamps, and some moderate wear.
