Scale of 1 inch to a mile.PROVENANCE: The "Popular" edition name reflected Ordnance Survey's desire to produce an attractive contoured road map in seven colours that would be popular with the general public. The larger sheet area (generally 27 x 18 miles) than previous engraved one-inch maps, even with new overlaps between sheets, allowed the whole of England and Wales to be covered on 146 sheets, numbered from north to south.
