Description: This dress is original WPA Milwaukee Handicraft Project doll clothing designed for a 19 inch (or possibly smaller) WPA girl doll. The background color in the print of the dress is blue printed with a pattern of red cherries or flowers with stems and tiny green leaves. The dress is stamped with the WPA Milwaukee Handicraft Project mark inside the bottom edge. The mark reads: “Milwaukee Handicraft Project Sponsored by Milwaukee County and Milwaukee State Teachers College”. The top of the mark is only partially visible as it was stamped on the fabric before it was folded over. The dress measures 14 inches from the back collar top edge to the bottom edge. I think it would be a maxi dress on a 19 inch doll. The dress is about 5 3/4 inches wide measured across the chest just below the bottom of the seams of the sleeves. The dress has a vertical stitched repair on the front at the neckline. It closes in the back with a snap. Other than the stitched repair the dress is in excellent condition. This clothing is from the Dr. Charles Walsbren collection of WPA dolls, figures and puppets. I purchased a number of WPA items that came from this collection. The dress I describe in this listing was said to be for a 19 inch doll. I do not have a 19 inch WPA doll to put it on to see if that is accurate or not. The 19 inch dolls seem to be harder to find than the 22 inch dolls. This clothing is too small to be used on the 22 inch dolls. The Works Project Administration (WPA) was a federal assistance program that put unemployed people to work during the Great Depression. It was part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. Congress voted to approve the WPA on April 8, 1935. Most of the people who were employed by the WPA were employed in construction types of jobs but people were also employed to create items by the Federal Arts Projects and the Women’s and Professional Projects Division of the WPA. The dolls were some of the items made in that program. The purpose of the dolls dressed in the clothing of other countries was educational so that they could be used in schools to demonstrate the customs, culture and dress that would be worn by people from other countries. Please examine the photos closely and purchase based on your own judgement as to condition and value. This item is inventory #11,624.
