1930s 1940s Berea College KY Handwoven Womens Wool Suit Set Skirt Tweed Homespun

Description: RARE Women's 3 Piece Suit SetHandwoven Wool fabric woven at Berea College, KY My father (82) always praised Berea College in Kentucky for their revival of traditional Appalachian arts, and so I am excited to offer to you this unique women's suit set. The fabric for this suit was handwoven by the Mountain Weaver Boys of Berea College, KY. The Mountain Weaver Boys was a student labor program that was formed in the late 1920s and dissolved around the mid-1940s. The woven fabric was sold as yardage although the college kept a list of tailors and local seamstresses who could take commissions. This set consists of 3 matched pieces: one blazer and 2 skirts. The blazer is lined and has the Mountain Weaver Boys label as well as a name stitched inside the sleeve. B/ Joe Dickenson or Dickerson. The weaver? The tailor? I am not sure. The skirts are not lined and have a less finished appearance inside than the blazer. They are not labeled, but are made of the same fabric. One skirt has a distinctive wide Talon brass zipper that dates it to the 1930s or 40s. It is hard to capture the color of the wool, but it is a red so dark that it seems brown, almost coffee brown, heathered with vivid green flecks. It is a heavy, more of a coat weight wool with a 2-2 twill weave. Blazer, laid flat: Underarm: 17" Waist 15" Length: 22.5" Sleeve length: 22" Has 2 front buttons, no sleeve buttons. Needs some basting stitches to the lining at the hem and sleevehead. Skirt A: Waist 29" Length 28.5" Hem circumference: 63" Brass Talon Zipper, works well.Skirt B: Waist: 28" Length 27.75" Hem circumference 59" (Valle?) Branded zipper is reluctant, but works. I have suggested a few minor repairs in the photographs but this suit is beautifully preserved, considering its age.
