Description: Commemorative badge issued by "Friends of the Soviet Union", a New York-based pro-Soviet public influence organization. The famous 1929 flight from Moscow to New York via Siberia and the Pacific Northwest, was the first flight between the two cities. Soviet pilot Sergei Shestakov was the captain of the Ant-4 "Country of Soviets" airplane crew that completed the historic flight from Moscow to New York in 1929. The Ant-4, also known as the Tupolev ANT-4 or TB-1 (Tyazholy Bombardirovschik, meaning Heavy Bomber), was an advanced Soviet aircraft of that time. As the captain of the Ant-4 crew, Shestakov led his team in completing the long-distance flight, which aimed to showcase the Soviet Union's achievements in aviation technology and strengthen diplomatic ties between the USSR and the United States. The journey took place from July 23 to September 3, 1929, and covered approximately 12,500 miles (20,000 kilometers). Upon their arrival in New York City, Shestakov and his crew were celebrated as heroes, receiving a warm welcome from both the American public and government officials. Their accomplishment garnered international attention and emphasized the USSR's growing prowess in the field of aviation. The design was done by Ann Cadwallader Coles (1882-1869). She was an American Communist born in Columbia, South Carolina.
