Description: 1928 CHINESE IMMIGRANT WIVES TO SAN FRANCISCO AND LOS ANGELES US House of Representatives Committee on Immigration. HEARINGS ON...WIVES OF AMERICAN CITIZENS OF ORIENTALRACE (Washington, DC, 1928) Softcover, 26 pages. Testimony of the Presidents of the Chinese-American Citizens Alliance of San Francisco and Los Angeles in favor of a bill to amend the 1924 Immigration Act to allow Chinese-American citizens to bring women they had married in China to the US as legal immigrants, a problem since "the scarcity of Chinese females in this country forces the Chinese-American citizen to go to China to seek wives of his own race", as "intermarriage" with white women was "inadvisable" and actually illegal in 11 states. The bill did not apply to Japanese-American, who had begun to suffer from racial discrimination, especially in California, in the early 20th century. A scarce document.
