The company was formed by the merger of the Pacific Coast Steamship Company and the Pacific-Alaska Navigation Company and was a direct competitor to the Alaska Steamship Company in the Alaska-Seattle shipping business. The PSC offered passenger service between California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska ports. It provided courtesy passes to employees of major railroads and their families.
