1924 SIGNED The 7 Seven Lively Arts by Gilbert Seldes 1st edition HC comedy

Description: SIGNED ON THE REVERSE OF THE FRONTISPIECE, THIS IS AN UNCOMMON FIRST EDITION AND EXTREMELY UNCOMMON SIGNED. THE BOOK IS TIGHT AND SQUARE BUT HAS A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF LITTLE ISSUES. 1- Book is signed on reverse of frontispiece (photo 2) and is a stated first edition (photo 5) 2- Nicely illustrated with cartoons (photo 7), caricatures (photo 10) and tipped in plates (photo 9) 3- I found three leaves with repairs. Two leaves (photo 8 left) have repairs to the bottom edges of the paper. One corner (photo 10) had been torn off and was reattached. The repairs were done neatly with glue. This is likely due to sloppy separation of pages as these were rough cut and likely had some uncut pages when published 4- Minor repairs noted to paper in hinge at rear end papers (photo 12) 5- Label on front board is worn (photo 1) and there is a small split at the top of the spine cover (photo 4). The corners have some of the decorative paper missing (photo 1 & 11) and some little chips have also fallen off of the edges of the boards. 6- There is an occasional small corner bend or imperfection and those patterned end papers appear to be brittle and are heavily toned. 7- There is toning to the paper, toning and soiling to the spine cover and some soiling to the exposed page edges. I did go page by page and found no other issues. There are no splits in the binding and no visible netting The overall condition would be classified as "good plus" as compared with a typical book but is in far better condition than the typical copy of THIS PARTICULAR TITLE. Virtually every available copy of this first Harper edition is classified as "acceptable". A signed copy is very uncommon.Intelligent, engaging discussions of slapstick, comic strips, vaudeville, and other elements of popular culture and their relationship to such traditional art forms as opera, ballet, drama, and classical music. Tributes to Chaplin, the Marx Brothers, and a host of other celebrities. 28 illustrations. The Seven Lively Arts is Seldes' most significant accomplishment. In explaining its title, he asserted that he was not referring to seven arts in particular – One thing should, perhaps, be made clear about the phrase. There were those who thought (correctly) that you couldn't find seven and there were those who felt (stuffily) that the seven were not arts. Lively was for the most part unchallenged. The sacred 7 came from the classics, from 'the seven arts' (which was also the name of a magazine recently defunct) and I never tried to categorize the contents of the book to conform to the figure. He would reiterate all his life that his intention was to treat popular (and denigrated) culture with the intelligent criticism that contemporary critics were largely inclined only to apply to highbrow culture. Following Seldes' completion of The Seven Lively Arts in 1923, he wrote that the central message of the book was that the minor arts, those frequently called 'lowbrow', are not hostile to the major arts, and that both the minor and the major have their chief enemy in the second rate bogus arts. In this book, he sought to explain why African-American music and shows were so popular, and to revise conventional definitions of art. I purchased a collection of books and other items from the estate of the owner of a former New York City bookstore named Cinemabilia at 10 West 13th St , run by Ernest D. Burns. It was located in Greenwich Village in the 1970's and 1980's and, I believe, closed down in 1987 (These books have been packed in boxes since 1987). It included primarily books on film, but also opera and puppets. Many of the books I will be listing are "new old stock" in that they were never sold. When his store closed down, he boxed everything up and they have spent the last thirty years boxed and/or bagged. As many were bagged, they will retain the brand new crispness of the jacket and pages, with many of the books clearly having never been opened until I did so to inspect and photograph them for purposes of identification. Those that were not bagged may have dusty edges or toning to the edges of the jackets and pages. If that is the case, I will describe them as such. Most of the new books that I have were printed in the 1970's and 1980's and I will also be listing many used books as this was also a used bookstore. I also have a bunch of signed books. While Adolph Zukor's autograph has gone down in value, that of Veronica Lake has increased. Since my "store" is limited to 1,000 free listings, the books will be listed also on my wife's account and the best way to find my listings will be to search the name that is printed above in bold letters & underlined; and include "description" in the search. PLEASE NOTE that I cannot combine shipping from different sellers. I am only beginning to list them in late 2017 and it will likely take me several months to get them all up. For many of these unsold books, the worst issue will be that there was a price label on the book somewhere, sometimes on the front paste down. While the labels come right off, they will have left discoloring behind. Again, if that is the case, I will mention it. I utilize a third party EBAY supplied shipper for international sales. This is part of the Global Shipping Program. Please note the actual shipping cost before purchasing. That is not my shipping fee and I neither receive it nor know what the amount is. I have no control over import fees that may be charged. Please do not commit to "buy it now" until you have seen the shipping amount that you will be charged. Thank you. For International Buyers: Media Mail shipments only. Please note that, although you are likely paying very high shipping costs to have this item sent to you, I am not charging those costs. In the case of books, I utilize "media mail" to get the box to the third party shipper. "Media mail" is a very SLOW speed mailing process reserved for books and records that are potentially very heavy. If you cannot wait for my shipment to reach the third party shipper at a very slow pace, please contact me before purchasing and I can add a faster (and more expensive) alternative to the listing to get the item to the third party shipper hw#bag MEDIA MAIL: The USPS allows books, records and other media to be mailed at a cheaper price than typical mail. It tends to be a much slower mailing process than standard mail. In addition, any employee of the USPS can open the package at ANY time for ANY reason to verify that what is inside is what should be inside. In most cases, the item is properly repackaged but in rare cases it is not, and an item can arrive damaged. As my feedback suggests, I package very carefully. If you receive a damaged item that has the appearance of having been poorly packaged, please contact me prior to leaving feedback so that it can be addressed. PLEASE NOTE: For book sales, I virtually always include a vinyl bag tightly wrapped on the exterior. This is an attempt to prevent any USPS employee from opening the package for inspection as it would be time consuming for them to repackage it. This is done simply because my packaging is done more carefully than their repackaging and also to protect the book from the elements. The vinyl bag covers cardboard protection and you can simply cut the bag open (carefully) and remove the contents. The cardboard protection is also typically held with tape and cutting in the obvious places will allow the cardboard to pop right open, exposing the book (in another protective vinyl bag). Using this method, you should be able to open any book I send in under a minute. No "buzz saw" is required. Thank you
