He asks his manager, Duncan Phelps, to make an excuse to explain his absence from the anniversary picnic attended by all the townspeople. Everyone is there, including Sam Biggs, Benton's oil expert, and Sam's niece from the city, Alice Torrance (Carmel Myers), whose beauty and girlish enthusiasm captivate all. A blind wanderer comes to town, an old man known only as Benjamin, with his violin. He is led to the picnic by a little boy and charms the company with his music. At first sight Duncan Phelps falls in love with Alice and suggests that she present to Benton the token subscribed for by the citizens. Benjamin also is taken to Benton's home to play for him. Benton responds to Alice 's witchery, but does not guess that it is love. Old Benjamin is persuaded to make his home with Benton and share his music. Alice, deeply interested in Benton, decided that he ought to give an evening of music to those he disappointed at the picnic, and assumes charge of it. The party is a success. Duncan Phelps proposes to Alice who declares that she likes but does not love him. She knows that she does love Benton and believes that he cares for her, so helps him to express himself. When the truth dawns on him he joyfully takes her in his arms. They return from a short honeymoon and the pleasure-loving young wife notices with impatience that her husband's business interests crowd in upon her plans for their enjoyment together. She cannot content herself with less than all his time. Duncan Phelps quietly asks her if she does not know she should have married him. Alice resents his question. Like fires of fate the great oil wells are burning and Benton gives all his time to preventing disaster. Alice has quarreled with him and decided to go away that night. Old Benjamin implores her not to reject the love which still is hers. At the moment she writes her letter of farewell Duncan Phelps appears. She demands that he take her to the train, while he begs her not to be rash. Alice forces him to escort her to the station, and Benjamin, on his knees, prays fervently for her protection. Duncan Phelps cannot longer resist temptation. Unknown to Alice he boards the train and finally steals into her compartment. Shocked, she repulses him, declaring that she loves her husband and will return to him. At the moment Benton reads his wife's note word comes that her train is wrecked. He is tom with anguish and self-reproach. The relief train returns with Alice, uninjured, and Duncan Phelps who is dying. He exonerates Alice, but she cannot believe her husband will do likewise. However, he tells her there is nothing to forgive and old Benjamin knows that his prayer has been answered. —Press Sheet from Library of Congress. Peg o' My Heart (1922) PEG O MY HEART (Metro Studios, 1922), directed by King Vidor, under the supervision of J. Hartley Manners, introduces the legendary theatrical actress Laurette Taylor (1884-1946) to the screen reprising the role she made famous as a poor Irish farm girl who inherits a fortune but would rather have happiness instead. While a bit too old for the character supposedly in her late teens or early twenties, Laurette was tailor made for it. The story opens in the heart of old Ireland where Jim O'Connell (Russell Simpson), an Irish patriot, is left alone to care for his little daughter, Margaret (Aileen O'Malley), whom he affectionately calls "Peg O My Heart," following the passing of his beloved wife (Sida Beth Ivans). Years pass. Margaret (Laurette Taylor), now a young woman helping her father work on his farm, finds herself being sent off to England where she is to live with her rich relatives, unaware of this arrangement provided by her father and a lawyer in order for her to collect the inheritance given to her by O'Connell's late father-in-law. While living under the roof of the Chichester family, Peg finds herself surrounded by their snobbery, with her only companions being her dog and Sir Gerald Adair (Mahlon Hamilton), a young man living in the neighborhood estate. While trying to make the best of the situation by bringing happiness to those around her, Peg becomes disillusioned when she finds out the real reason why she's been taken in by the Chichesters. Lightweight and amusing, PEG O MY HEART is reminiscent to another old chestnut play titled WAY DOWN EAST later popularized as a 1920 movie version directed by D.W. Griffith with Lillian Gish as the poor Anna coming to live with rich relatives where she finds herself feeling out of place due to their snobbery. While WAY DOWN EAST is noted solely for its climatic snow storm sequence after the heroine has been cast out, PEG O MY HEART has no such highlights to attract interest of suspense. It pure comedy that relies mostly on Laurette Taylor's performance. Of the three silent films starring Taylor, so far PEG O MY HEART is the only survivor. Believed lost, a print was discovered in an European archive around the 1960s, restored and given limited revivals, notably in the theater section of New York City's Museum of Modern Art. To date, it's only known television broadcast was on New York's public television station, WNET, Channel 13, where PEG O MY HEART served as the third movie presentation to an eight-week series, "Lost and Found" (June-August, 1978) hosted by Richard Schickel, premiering July 8, 1978. After the 62 minute presentation of the movie (piano scored with some footage still missing), Schickel talked more about the film and Laurette Taylor before concluding with a 17-minute silent comedy short, THE PEST (1921), starring the youthful British comedian, Stan Laurel, only a few years prior to his legendary screen partnership opposite fellow comedian, Oliver Hardy. The Man Who Waited (1922) Frank Magee teams up with Sandy, his father's ex-partner, and falls in love with June Rance, daughter of his father's murderer. Sánchez and Black Pete learn from Sandy the whereabouts of his mine, kill Rance, and attempt to file a claim on the mine. When Frank tries to overtake them, he is too late but finds that June has filed ahead of the Mexicans. Pawned (1922) No money and stranded, John Bruce agrees to return to New York to investigate the operation of a nightclub for its owner, Gilbert Larmond. There he meets Claire Veniza, who operates a mobile pawnshop with her father in cooperation with the club, follows her home, becomes involved in a street fight, and stumbles into Claire's room seriously injured. Claire is forced to agree to marry drug-addicted Dr. Crang in return for medical aid to John. Claire and John fall in love, however; John saves Larmond from Crang's plots; and Old Hawkins, Claire's real father, keeps Claire from the doctor's clutches by driving his cab (which he believes to carry only Crang but actually includes Claire) off a ferryboat. Old Hawkins and Crang drown, but John rescues Claire. Note that we have provided a picture of the front cover of the magazine, and pictures of interior spreads. These images should greatly help you judge the overall condition of the magazine. Please realize that there were only a few ads in each magazine, and that the bulk of each magazine is taken up by stories about current productions and other information of interest to theater owners (and I don't know that this information can be found anywhere else or that it has been reproduced in any book since its first publication!).
