He was sent to study engineering in Germany. In Dresden his voice was discovered, and he began the singing studies here. In 1914 he came to North America and joined the choir of the New York Metropolitan Opera. There he soon received smaller soloparties; In 1916 he became a soloist, when he sang the role of the host in Puccini's + Manon Lescaut, at the Metropolitan Opera. He stayed for six years at this house, where he was given more and more important tasks. In 1920-21 he sang at the Scotti Opera Company, among others. The Sharpless in + Madame Butterfly½, the Valentin in the + Faust½ of Gounod, the Silvio in the + Bajazzo½ and the Enrico in + Lucia di Lammermoor. In 1919 he took part in the Metropolitan Opera at the premiere of the opera + L'Oiseau bleu½ by Albert Wolff.
