In this volume Gellert, listed in Reilly as an Australian war poet, writes a number of poems that deal directly with life and death at the front. A Gallipoli veteran, Gellert won the University of Adelaide's Bundey Prize in 1917 with his serious poetry of war. Gellert later moved to Sydney where he continued his journalistic career.In a letter (not part of this item) from Zora Cross to Harry Chaplin, it is recalled Zora being in George Robertson's office the day the drawings for this book arrived, and remembers the publisher laughing when he noted the resemblance to himself in the face of the figure in the drawing facing page 13. If this was intentional, it may have been when Norman was having one of his "outs" with the publisher.In pictorial green cloth hardcover with black lettering with decorated end papers, in 124 pages. There is light shelfwear. There are no previous owners' names or inscriptions. There is no foxing. There is no sunning. The plates are bright, fresh and crisp. There are no missing, loose, creased, stained or damaged pages. The spine and binding are solid. It is complete and original.
