Description: One would not have an idea of what this book is about from the title, "Famous Pictures Reproduced from Renowned Paintings by The World's Greatest Artists", subtitled, "Selected from the Best and Most Noted Art Galleries of France, England, Italy, the United States and Many Other Countries". No author identified, the first copyright 1902 by Thompson and Thomas, this version copyright 1917 by Stanton and Van Vliet Co. It isn't until the first paragraph that one understands what this is about: "THe highest form of the painter's art is conceded to be the delineation of the human figure, and the loftiest range of figure painting is that which is comprehended the general title of the nude. The painting of the nude model is the crowning test of an art student's proficiency, and the accomplished artist turns to classical and idyllic subjects in order to establish the loftiest standard of his skill." So there you have it. Black and white "pictures" of women clothed and nude adorn I believe every (or just about every) page of this 352 page book. Clean textured brown boards with very light corner and edge wear. A previous owner name on the front endpaper, else no markings in the 352 clean and solidly bound glossy pages of this curious book.
