Description: This is the 1916 Green Bag, the yearbook of Baltimore City College. The yearbook includes individual photos of graduating seniors. There are also photos of students participating in activities such as The Senior Play as well as group photos of participants in various associations. There is a large fold-out photo of the members of the class of 1916 as well as a group photo of the faculty. One very notable graduate is William Bloom, who would become a renowned pathologist. His photo appears on page 48 of this yearbook. According to the Hanna Holborn Gray Special Collections at the University of Chicago: William Bloom was born on September 15, 1899 in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended the Friends School and Baltimore City College. He received an A.B. (1918) and M.D. (1923) from Johns Hopkins University. Bloom was awarded an honorary doctor’s degree from the Jagellonian University of Cracow, Poland in 1964. Bloom briefly served in the U.S. Army during WWI. He became the associate pathologist at Michael Reese Hospital from 1923 to 1925. In 1926 Bloom came to the University of Chicago as the Smith Foundation Fellow in Anatomy. He became an Assistant Professor in 1929, Associate Professor in 1933, and Professor in 1941. He served as Chairman of the Department of Anatomy from 1941 to 1946, and in 1957 was names the Charles H. Swift Distinguished Service Professor in the Departments of Anatomy and in the Committee on Biophysics. Bloom became emeritus in 1965, retiring in 1969. Bloom was one of nine University of Chicago faculty to become one of the “Starred Men of Science” in 1944. The yearbook: Hardcover, first edition, the yearbook is in overall good condition. The front and rear hinges are strongly intact. The Green Bags of this era were all covered in leather, and over the years the leather has deteriorated. The deterioration on front and back covers is not the result of improper yearbook storage, but is simply the result of passage of time. This leather now easily rubs off when the yearbook is handled. Besides the front and rear boards, the yearbook is in excellent condition. There is some foxing to blank pages at front and rear of book. There are no missing pages. Part of a fold-out class photo has separated at one of the folds but is present. There is no writing in book. It measures 11.0" x 8.0" and has a navy blue cover with "The Green Bag 1916" in gold letters. The book has 234 pages, plus several pages of advertisements. Mostly black and white illustrations, with a few in color.
