Description: Here is an old, black & white photo of a woman in a dark shirt, a lighter colored skirt and with a black hat decorated with what could be crocheted flowers and a large black plume. On her lap is an infant dressed in a white dress with white shoes. On the back they are identified as Grandma Nowlin (Electa Hopkins) & granddaughter Virginia Jane Butterfield 1914. The photographer was Gusenbar of Jackson, Michigan. I did some research and found Electa Hopkins in census records living in Jackson, Michigan, with her husband, Edward Nowlin (1826 - 1909), and their children. Electa was born in New York, in 1846, the daughter of Leroy & Sally Hopkins. She died in 1922, she and Edward are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Jackson, Michigan. Electa and Edward's youngest child, Corinda (Cora) was married to Sidney Butterfield. Corinda was born in 1885 and died in 1965, Sidney was born in 1883 and died in 1942, they are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Jackson, Michigan. Their daughter was Virginia Jane Butterfield, the infant in this photo. She was born in 1913, as an adult she was a school teacher. The photo is nice and clear, with a few marks in the older woman's skirt. It is mounted on cardboard that might have been a photographer's folder, but the flaps are missing. There are rough edges and corners on the cardboard. A great old photo for anyone researching the history of the Hopkins, Nowlin and Butterfiled families. Postage will be 4.20 to the U. S.
