Description: Government House, Hobart, Tasmania. (Contemporaneous) Copy of a telegram dated 24th October 1914 (so actually from 1914), sent by the Governor of Tasmania (Sir William Ellison-Macartney) from Government House, Hobart, relating to the outbreak of World War 1. The telegram was sent to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, Lewis Vernon Harcourt, 1st Viscount Harcourt PC (1863-1922). "Confidnetial stop. Papers here state that War Office have asked for services of all trained men stop. Kerr-Pearse, my Private Secretary, late Rifle Brigade, not Reserve of Officers, though medically reported unfit for active service in field is prepared to return home at once if services can be otherwise used stop. Please acquaint War Office and inform me if services accepted". This relates to Major Kerr-Pearse (1871-1934), a British Army Officer, who served his country as a Civil Servant in Australia and his role at the outset of WW1. Sir William Grey Ellison-Macartney KCMG (1852-1924) was an Irish born British politician who served as the Governor of the Australian states of Tasmania and Western Australia. Lewis Vernon Harcourt, 1st Viscount Harcourt PC (1863-1922) was a British Liberal Party politician who held the Cabinet Post of Sec of State for the Colonies from 1910-1915. His nickname was Loulou. Measures 12" x 9". Two horizontal folds as originally issued (and will be posted folded, along the original folds). Two pinholes to top left corner, otherwise in good / very good condition - see photos.
